Herbal Remedies for Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin disorder with a genetic predisposition, which occurs when the growth rate of new skin cells is accelerated. The result is piled on raised patches of red, thick, new skin covered with flakes of dead scaly skin. 1. Tea tree oil (Melaleuca Oil) herbal treatment for Psoriasis
Tea Tree Oil based Shampoos help lots of people with scalp disorders, especially psoriasis, seborrhea, and dandruff.  Tea tree has a long history of traditional use by Australian aboriginals who used tea tree leaves for healing skin cuts, burns, and infections by crushing the leaves and applying them to the affected area.  Tea tree oil contains terpenoids, which have been found to have antiseptic and antifungal activity.  The anti-microbial effects of tea tree oil help to naturally reduce the psoriasis.  This is effective herbal treatment of psoriasis. Tea tree oil is the active ingredient in a variety of creams, lotions, soaps and shampoos. Tea tree oil is toxic if ingested and should only be used topically. Some rare cases of contact allergy have been reported, so be careful at first.

2. Aloe herbal treatment for Psoriasis
Aloe is a member of the lily family and the fluid contained in the leaves has been used for centuries to treat burns and minor wounds. Today, aloe gel is used frequently as an ingredient in cosmetics, creams, ointments and suntan lotions.  Clinical studies are mixed with aloe vera based treatments.  The moisturizing properties seems to smooth out the irritated skin in some people.  Aloe has been proposed for natural psoriasis treatment for many centuries.

Overall Grade: C+, Aloe shows some promise for natural treatment of psoriasis.  It may help the dry flaky skin in some people, but will not reduce the redness.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar herbal treatment for Psoriasis
The Alkaline properties of ACV seem to reduce the redness of psoriasis.  Apple cider vinegar has been used throughout the years as a disinfectant or soothing agent. Improving your overall pH may help balance out your immune system’s overactive response. This may be an effective herbal remedy for psoriasis.
Try taking 3-4 baths a week with 2 cups of ACV (inexpensive stuff in the grocery store) soak for 30 minutes then shower for a minute in cold water, Also, 3 times a day, 30 minutes before meals to take a tablespoon of (raw from a health food store) ACV in a glass of water. Add a little honey or cinnamon for taste.

Overall Grade: A-, An effective herbal treatment for psoriasis.  Lots of patients feel better and have less skin irritation.  Some are able to reduce or even resolve lesions.

4. Emu oil herbal treatment for Psoriasis
Australia’s Aborigines value emu oil for for its healing powers.  Emu oil is a good emollient and water-binding agent with anti-inflammatory properties. Emu oil naturally contains Vitamin E and Vitamin A (antioxidant and healing agents), Oleic acid (a skin cell regenerator and anti-wrinkle agent), Sapogens (skin softeners.) Overall grade: C, Good moisturizer for the herbal treatment of psoriasis, but very expensive and hard to find.

5. Oatmeal Products herbal treatment for Psoriasis
Many skin-care products, such as Aveeno, contain oat extract. Oat extracts have been used for centuries as soothing topical agents and to manage dry, itchy skin conditions. Many bath products include colloidal oatmeal as the active ingredient.  Oats seem to be a good and easy to use natural remedy for psoriasis.

Overall grade: B, helps sooth inflamed skin but will not get rid of psoriasis.  Oat products are one of many natural remedies for psoriasis

6. Fish oil herbal treatment for Psoriasis
Fish oils, containing high ratios of Omega 3’s (DHA and EPA), have anti-inflammatory effects, reduce cholesterol, decrease blood pressure, and reduce cardiovascular risk.  Cultures that eat high levels of fish as their main source of protein are some of the longest living and healthiest people on earth (Okinawa and Mediterranean.)  Fish oil may help regulate the immune system and reduce Psoriasis flares.  Fish Oil is an effective natural remedy for psoriasis. There are so many positive benefits of fish oil that I recommend it to most patients just to maintain their health.  Pick a high quality brand and most companies filter the oil well to reduce impurities and toxins, such as mercury.  I recommend Nordic Naturals because of their quality, high levels of DHA and EPA, and lack of fishy aftertaste.  Try taking 2 capsules twice per day with meals.

Overall Grade: A, Fish oil is a great natural treatment for Psoriasis. It is easy to take and has many other health benefits anyways.

7. Oregano oil herbal treatment for Psoriasis
Oregano oil possesses anti-microbial and ant-oxidant  properties, which may help psoriasis.  Many other skin conditions are also associated with bacteria as well, such as eczema and rosacea.  This may explain why some anti-microbials help reduce psoriasis and these other skin problems.   Oregano is a good natural treatment for psoriasis.  People have reported good results with using oregano oil topically, especially on the scalp, and also using one drop under the tongue to ingest internally.  It is recommend that you mix oregano with olive oil to create your topical mixture.

Here are some of my tips:

-Eat less BBQ:  The cooking process of red meat on direct heat creates advanced glycation end products (aka A.G.E.’s, witnessed by black charcoal marks from BBQ.), which increase your risk of several cancers, such as colon, rectal and gastric cancers. These A.G.E’s  increase inflammation and oxidative stress in your body.

-Eat more of the good sinful pleasures:  Dark chocolate, deep red/blue berries, coffee, and walnuts.  These contain polyphenols, which cause apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells and have anti-oxidants properties.  Onions, berries, Green Tea, and Berries have Quercetin (a dietary flavonoid) which positively modulates the immune system.

-Citrus: Citrus fruits have flavonoids, which are inhibitors of interleukin-4 and interleukin-13.  This helps reduce allergic auto-immune diseases, such as psoriasis and eczema.

- Green Tea: Green tea contains catechins (EGCG) and many polyphenols , which have been shown to reduce mortality due to all causes, reduce death from heart disease, and help reduce memory decline.

- Soy:  Soy contains isoflavones reduce your risk of several types of cancer and modulate your immunological response to stress.  Try edamame beans every day, soy milk, or learning how to eat/cook/use tofu.

-Tumeric: More and more evidence shows profound health benefits to this yellow spice, found in Indian curry.  The Curcumin inhibits several inflammatory markers that activate the immune system.  Tumeric has been shown to reduce the risk of Prostate cancer, Colon cancer, offers neuroprotection against Alzheimer’s disease, reduces gout and rheumatoid arthritis, and reduces Psoriasis flares.  Use tumeric on your meats and eat more curry. Great stuff and cheap in bulk from health food stores.

-Fiber:  Whole grains have anti-oxidant properties, reduce your cancer risk, and improve your bowel function.  Try to changing all of your carbs to whole grains by switching to Brown whole wheat: Rice, Bread, Pasta.  Even better, add Quinoa to your diet.

-Ginger: ginger has many anti-inflammatory effects by reducing TNF alpha, prostaglandin-E2, and Thromboxane B2.  Use ginger in your meat and vegetables marinades and with cooking. 

-Walk or exercise for 45-60 min every day if possible. We all have lots of excuses for not exercising (myself included), but we all waste 45min daily on T.V./Internet/Phone, so there is time in the day that can be found for exercise. It makes you feel great to start the day with exercise and reduces symptoms of all human diseases, so get started today.
